Frees Qi at both the Qi and Blood levels, releases Liver and Gallbladder constraint, descends Qi in the chest and abdomen, and warms Qi that has been slowed by pathogenic Cold — for painful, Cold Qi with abdominal distention, borborygmus and diarrhea; and for Qi and Blood Stagnation with menstrual irregularity, lower abdominal pain, and generalized bodily pain and distention.
Tonifies the Blood and moves Qi — for premenstrual symptoms, menstrual pain, and irregular menstruation.
Dysmenorrhea.
Qi Stagnation together with Blood Stasis.
Addresses the full range from Liver Qi Stagnation to deep Blood Stasis, with pain anywhere in the body — stabbing chest pain, distending breast pain, Cold epigastric pain, pain from lower-body bulging disorder, and dysmenorrhea.

Anmerkungen
- Its neutral property, combined with its dispersing and harmonizing action, explains its widespread use.
- It is among the most frequently used analgesics for abdominal pain, particularly in the upper abdomen.
- For menstrual problems related to Liver tension, it is combined with either Rx. Bupleuri Chai Hu or Rx. Linderae Wu Yao, but not both together.
- It disperses and spreads stagnant Liver and Stomach Qi, making it best suited for emotional Stagnation (irritability), epigastric and hypochondriac distention and pain, and menstrual problems — particularly when bleeding is scanty.
- It is also said to treat melancholy.
- Both Xiang Fu and Rx. Aucklandiae Mu Xiang are bitter and acrid, promote Qi flow, stop pain, and — most importantly — enter the San Jiao channel. Mu Xiang moves clumped Qi in the Stomach and Intestine channels and reduces Food Stagnation, and is used for epigastric fullness, abdominal distention, and diarrhea. Xiang Fu, by contrast, dredges and disperses Qi Stagnation in the Stomach and Liver and is especially suited to relieving Liver Qi Stagnation, regulating menstruation, and stopping pain; it is used for emotional constraint, distending pain in the ribs and flanks, and irregular menstruation.
- Processed Cyperus, Zhi Xiang Fu, is most effective for dredging the Liver and relieving pain.
- Black Cyperus, Hei Xiang Fu, enters the Liver Blood level to harmonize the Blood and stop bleeding, treating irregular menstrual bleeding.
- Dry-fried Cyperus, Chao Xiang Fu, regulates pain caused by Qi Stagnation.
- Four-Substance Prepared Cyperus, Si Zhi Xiang Fu, is less likely to exhaust Qi or dry the Yin and Yang fluids, and is better at promoting Qi flow, unblocking the collaterals, reducing accumulation, and relieving pain — suited to deficient patients with pathogenic obstruction.
