Anmerkungen

  • Rx. Trichosanthis Tian Hua Fen, Tub. Ophiopogonis Mai Men Dong, and Tub. Asparagi Tian Men Dong share the ability to clear Heat and moisten the Lungs, though each suits a different origin: Tian Hua Fen for Lung Heat arising from Stomach Heat, Mai Men Dong for Lung Heat arising from Heart Fire, and Tian Men Dong for Lung Dryness from Kidney Yin Deficiency.
  • It is frequently used in febrile illness accompanied by thirst.
  • It has a particular application for swelling in the chest and throat.
  • It is said to regulate and direct Qi downward, open the chest, and ease irritability.
  • A skin test should precede injection to guard against an allergic reaction.
  • Given by injection, it can induce abortion between the 3rd and 7th month.
  • Trichosanthin serves as the active ingredient of GLQ223, an antiviral used against HIV infection.
  • Some sources classify this herb among the Cool Antitussives — those that transform Phlegm and stop cough by cooling and resolving Phlegm-Heat.
  • It disperses Blood stagnated by trauma, frees blocked menstruation, expels the Heat behind mania, resolves yellow jaundice, moistens severe Dryness, and is especially effective against alcohol toxicity.
  • Research has found it effective at inhibiting cancer-cell growth, and it has been used to treat skin cancer.
  • It settles the Small Intestine, resolves swelling, treats breast abscess, and expels pus to promote the regeneration of flesh.
  • For breast abscess: grind 30g of this herb together with 3g Olibanum Ru Xiang into a powder, and take 6g at a time with wine.
  • For early-stage carbuncles or swelling: decoct the herb in wine, dry it, grind it to powder, mix with millet wine, spread on paper, and apply to the affected area.
  • Alternatively, grind equal parts of this herb and Sm. Phaseoli Lu Dou, mix with vinegar, and apply to the lesion.
  • Tian Hua Fen and Hb. Dendrobii Shi Hu both generate fluids, relieve thirst, nourish Yin, clear Heat and enrich the Stomach, and are often paired. Tian Hua Fen, sweet and cold, acts mainly on the Lungs and Stomach and is the stronger of the two at generating fluids, bringing down Phlegm-Fire, expelling pus, and reducing swelling. Shi Hu, sweet, bland, slightly salty and cold, enters the Kidneys and Stomach, enriches Kidney Jing, and is better suited to cooling Heat arising from Deficiency.
  • Tian Hua Fen and Rz. Phragmitis Lu Gen both cool Heat in the Lungs and Stomach, nourish Yin, and generate fluids, and are frequently combined for unquenchable thirst in febrile disease and for cough from Lung Heat. Tian Hua Fen is the stronger fluid-generator and Yin-nourisher, used mainly for Stomach Yin Deficiency or fluid loss, and it also resolves toxicity, moves Blood, and reduces swelling in toxic sores and boils. Lu Gen cools more strongly at the Lung and Stomach Qi level, venting and dispersing pathogens, making it best suited to the early stage of warm pathogen disease; because it can expel pus, it is also used for Lung abscess.
