  • E Jiao and Rx. Rehmanniae Shu Di Huang both enter the Liver and Kidney channels, nourishing Blood, enriching Kidney Yin, and addressing Blood Deficiency and gynecological problems such as irregular menses or disorders of pregnancy and the postpartum period. Shu Di Huang differs in generating Jing and building marrow, whereas E Jiao enriches Lung Yin and arrests bleeding. Both are greasy substances that can burden digestion.
  • E Jiao nourishes Blood, moistens Dryness and clears Heat. Rx. Polygoni Multiflori He Shou Wu enters the Liver, tonifies Blood to expel Wind, and darkens the hair and beard, but cannot moisten Dryness or calm wheezing. Colla Cornus Cervi Lu Jiao Jiao warms the Du and Chong channels to augment Blood, but it cannot clear Heat from the Lung channel or stop coughing. Colla Plastri Testudinis Gui Ban strongly tonifies Jue Yin and fills the Ren channel, reducing Heat and relieving steaming-bone disorder, but it cannot tonify Yang within Yin.
  • E Jiao Zhu (Ass-Hide Glue Pearls), clam-powder-fried Ge Fen Chao E Jiao, or plain fried Chao E Jiao are more effective at nourishing Lung Yin, moistening the Lungs, stopping cough and resolving Phlegm. These forms are commonly chosen for dry cough and wheezing from Lung Dryness, or for consumptive cough where Yin has been damaged and Fire has become excessive, especially when Blood appears in the sputum.
  • Pu Huang Chao E Jiao (Ass-Hide Glue fried with Pollen Typhae) nourishes Blood and moistens Dryness while also invigorating Blood, dispersing Stasis, arresting bleeding and harmonizing the collaterals. It tonifies without cloying and stops bleeding without causing Stagnation, making it suitable for gynecological conditions such as threatened miscarriage or persistent uterine bleeding.
