  • Its heaviness gives it a strong stabilizing quality, which is why it is widely used to treat disturbed Shen.
  • The mercury it contains is largely rendered non-toxic, as it cannot be absorbed in free ionic form, but frequent use is still discouraged since trace amounts of mercury can build up over time.
  • It treats palpitations and emotional distress, and is especially favored when these arise from fright and anxiety.
  • Some sources credit it with brightening the eyes.
  • Zhu Sha and Rz. Coptidis Huang Lian both cool Heart Fire, calm the Spirit, and resolve toxicity. Zhu Sha, being heavy, also expels Phlegm and is more effective for withdrawal-mania caused by Phlegm-Fire, and for resolving toxicity it is used externally only. Huang Lian is more effective at draining Fire, clearing Heat and cooling the Blood, treating restlessness, irritability, delirium and bleeding caused by Heat entering the Ying Level in febrile disease; it is used both internally and topically, and it also dries Dampness and treats dysenteric disorders, focal distention, nausea and vomiting associated with Damp-Heat.
