  • A non-standardized product made by fermenting wheat flour and bran together with assorted herbs — among them Hb. Artemisiae Annuae Qing Hao, Sm. Armeniacae Xing Ren, Fr. Xanthii Cang Er Zi, Sm. Phaseoli Chi Xiao Dou and Rz. Atractylodis Macrocephalae Bai Zhu — the exact composition varying by preparation.
  • It is most suited to conditions arising from excessive consumption of alcohol, starches and grains.
  • It is also included in mineral-containing pills to help the body digest and absorb them.
  • It sends Qi downward, transforms Phlegm, expels water and transforms thin mucus.
  • In children it tonifies the Spleen.
  • It decreases milk production and aids weaning.
  • The unfermented form, Jian Shen Qu, regulates Qi, transforms Dampness, reduces and resolves congestion, and disperses Wind-Cold.
  • Dry-fried, Chao Shen Qu, disperses less strongly but is better at strengthening the Spleen, harmonizing the Stomach, resolving Food Stagnation and regulating the Middle Jiao.
  • Scorched, Jiao Shen Qu, is markedly stronger at resolving Food Stagnation and may be used by itself.
