Notes

  • It is frequently applied for pelvic inflammation, particularly urinary tract infection.
  • The whole plant, Hb. Plantaginis Che Qian Cao, promotes urination less strongly but clears Heat more effectively; it also detoxifies. Sweet and cold, it treats abscesses and swellings both internally and topically, at a dosage of 9-30g or 2-5ml as a tincture.
  • The seed's mucilage content soothes the vagina, colon, and urinary tract.
  • It plays a key role in promoting urination, clearing Damp-Heat, and clearing Heat from the Liver and Lung.
  • Because the seeds are quite small, decoct them in a separate cloth bag to keep the decoction from becoming too gelatinous.
  • Che Qian Zi and Rz. Alismatis Ze Xie both promote water movement, reduce edema, clear Heat, enter the Kidney channel, and drain Dampness, and are often paired for edema-related abdominal distention, Lin Syndrome, and Summerheat-Damp diarrhea. Che Qian Zi benefits the Kidneys by removing pathogenic Dampness, clears the Liver and eyes, and transforms Lung Phlegm to address pathogenic Heat causing red eyes and Phlegm from Lung Heat, while Ze Xie clears and drains ministerial Fire to treat Blazing Fire from Yin Deficiency.
  • Unprocessed Plantago Seeds, Sheng Che Qian Zi, are slippery and heavy, guiding Heat and Dampness downward and out via the urine.
  • Dry-fried Plantago Seeds, Chao Che Qian Zi, are milder in coldness and can expel water and Dampness without harming Spleen Qi; they are used for diarrhea and/or vaginal discharge from Spleen Deficiency.
  • Salt-processed Plantago Seeds, Yan Zhi Che Qian Zi, direct downward to promote urination, treating overflow of water and Dampness from Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency.
