Associations

  • Turbid Dampness Obstructing the Middle Jiao with nausea, vomiting, fullness and distention of the chest, epigastrium and abdomen, poor appetite, diarrhea, and a turbid, greasy tongue coat.

    • Pei
    • Lan

Summer Heat with Dampness causing fatigue, chest stifling sensations, abdominal distention, nausea, and a thin, greasy tongue coat.

  • Wind-Cold with Dampness Obstructing the Middle Jiao, producing fever and chills, a stifling sensation in the chest and epigastrium, cough, and nausea.

  • Early-stage Damp-Warm febrile disease with fever, aching limbs, lethargy, abdominal distention, dark scanty urine, and constipation; also Summerheat with Dampness.

  • Early-stage Damp-Warmth where Dampness predominates, with fever, chest stifling sensation, nausea, a heavy encumbered feeling, sticky mouth sensation, and absence of thirst.

  • Morning sickness.

  • Vomiting and diarrhea from Spleen and Stomach Deficiency.

  • Vomiting caused by Damp-Heat.

  • Transforms Dampness, regulates Qi, harmonizes the Stomach, and stops nausea and vomiting, treating turbid Dampness Obstructing the Spleen with lethargy, chest stifling sensation, nausea, poor appetite, diarrhea or loose stools, and a thick tongue coat (use Zi Su Geng). Also releases the Exterior for externally-contracted pathogens, such as Cold contracted during hot, damp summer weather, with fever, lethargy, chest stifling sensation, and nausea.

  • Summerheat with Dampness stagnating in the Middle Jiao.

  • Summer-Dampness combined with Wind-Cold.

    • Zhi
    • Ban Xia

Notes

  • Addresses Turbid Dampness that blocks the Middle Jiao and disrupts the Spleen's ability to transform and transport.
  • Its main use is for Summer-Heat that affects the Spleen and Stomach.
  • It is applied when rotting food in the Stomach produces bad breath.
  • It relieves turbid stagnation and obstruction, tightness of the chest or abdomen, nausea, vomiting, and morning sickness.
  • Hb. Agastaches/Pogostemonis Huo Xiang, Fol. Perillae Zi Su Ye, and Rz. Phragmitis Lu Gen each help control vomiting: Huo Xiang excels at transforming Dampness, Zi Su Ye at releasing the exterior, and Lu Gen at clearing Stomach Heat.
  • Agastache was the traditional source plant, but over the last hundred years Pogostemonis has been grown and substituted for it. Some sources hold that this herb addresses Wind-Cold invasion with underlying internal Dampness.
  • It is frequently paired with Hb. Eupatorii Pei Lan, which works best for excessive salivation and an unpleasant, sticky mouth sensation, whereas Huo Xiang is more effective for releasing the exterior and stopping vomiting.
  • Huo Xiang and Hb. Eupatorii Pei Lan both dispel Summerheat and transform Dampness, and are commonly combined. Huo Xiang is better suited to expelling externally-contracted Cold during hot summer weather, while Pei Lan is milder, more harmonizing, and less dispersing.
  • Patchouli Leaf Huo Xiang Ye moves the Exterior and disperses pathogens, treating externally-contracted Wind-Cold with Internal Dampness Obstruction.
  • Patchouli Stalk Huo Xiang Geng moves the Middle and opens the chest, and is especially good at harmonizing the Stomach and stopping nausea; it is commonly used for nausea and vomiting from Dampness Obstructing the Middle, Stomach Cold, or morning sickness.
  • Fresh Patchouli Xian Huo Xiang relieves Summerheat and releases the Exterior, and is often brewed as a tea with Hb. Menthae Haplocalycis Bo He for early-stage Summerheat with Dampness.
  • Patchouli Dew Huo Xiang Lu, acrid and slightly warm, uses its strong aroma to clear Summerheat, restore the normal flow of Qi, and dissipate Turbid Dampness; it treats Summerheat-Dampness that obstructs Qi flow with chest stifling sensation, nausea, and vomiting, and is prized for preventing Summerheat disorders.
