Associations

Notes

  • It is typically paired with Rx. Angelicae Sinensis Dang Gui to move the Blood and relieve pain.
  • Combined with sedative herbs, it can treat restlessness.
  • Fr. Akebiae Ba Yue Zha, bitter and neutral, enters the Stomach and Liver channels, spreading Liver Qi and dispersing clumping; it treats Liver/Stomach Disharmony, hypochondriac and hernia pain, scrofula, breast and digestive-tract cancer, urinary difficulty, and Stone Lin, at a dosage of 6-12g.
  • It drains Heat more effectively than Medulla Tetrapanacis Tong Cao.
  • Mu Tong and Ze Xie are frequently combined, as both promote the flow of the water pathways. Mu Tong clears Fire from the Heart and Small Intestine channels and unblocks the flow of Qi and Blood, while Ze Xie clears ministerial Fire in the Kidney channel.
  • Mu Tong and Succinum Hu Po both drain Fire from the Small Intestine and promote urination, treating painful, rough urination and hematuria from Small Intestine Fire, clearing Heart-channel Fire, and unblocking the vessels for use in Blood Stasis amenorrhea. Mu Tong is used chiefly for mouth ulcers, red eyes, and irritability, and it also promotes lactation and treats Damp-Heat painful obstruction. Hu Po, by contrast, clears the Heart and settles fright, being used mainly for spasms and seizures from constrained Heat, as well as palpitations, insomnia, and disturbed dreaming; it also treats traumatic hematomas and toxic sores and swellings.
  • Mu Tong and Medulla Junci Deng Xin Cao both clear and drain Heart Fire, directing Small Intestine Heat out through the urine, and are combined for Lin syndrome. Mu Tong, bitter and cold, is the stronger of the two, treating mouth and tongue ulcers and swollen red eyes, and it unblocks Qi and Blood flow to address amenorrhea, insufficient lactation, or painful obstruction. Deng Xin Cao is milder, its Heart-clearing action aimed mainly at children's night terrors from Heart Heat, and it also drains Lung Heat for sore throat.
  • Dry-fried Caulis Akebia, Chao Mu Tong, is less cold and so does not injure the Stomach, yet still cools Heat and promotes urination without depleting Yuan Qi.
