Anmerkungen
- Lu Rong is regarded as a bridge substance linking Blood and flesh — the young, still-unossified antler, and the most potent of the four antler preparations. Its action moves upward, and it arises from the Du Channel, which governs the opening of bones and joints.
- Taken alone as a powder, it addresses infertility arising from Kidney Yang Deficiency together with weakness of the Chong and Ren channels.
- Alone as a powder, it also strengthens weak sinews and bones.
- As a stand-alone powder it is likewise given for delayed development in children.
- Mature Cervi Cornu, Lu Jiao 鹿膠, is the shed, fully mature antler. Salty and warm, it enters the Liver and Kidney channels; its power to tonify Kidney Yang is weaker, but it invigorates the Blood, disperses Stagnation, and reduces swelling — useful for sores, breast abscesses, pain from Blood Stagnation, and deep low back pain. Dosage runs 3–10g decocted or 1–1.5g as a powder, and it may also be applied topically as a powder.
- Colla Cervi Cornus, Lu Jiao Jiao 鹿角胶, the glue rendered from mature antler, is less costly and milder in effect. Sweet, salty and warm, it enters the Kidney and Liver channels; weaker than Lu Rong, it still nourishes and tonifies Qi and Blood while stopping bleeding, treating Jing and Blood Deficiency accompanied by bleeding, and Yin-type sores. Combined with Plastrum Testudinis, Gui Ban, it forms a glue that tonifies both Yin and Yang, addressing headache, tinnitus, premature ejaculation, or heavy bleeding from the digestive or urinary tract. It is dosed at 4–12g, dissolved in warmed yellow wine.
- Cervi Cornu Degelatinatum, Lu Jiao Shuang 鹿角霜, is the residue left after boiling down antler glue. Sweet and mildly warm, it tonifies Jing and Blood less than the preparations above, but its astringent, retaining effect is stronger, making it suited to uterine bleeding and vaginal discharge from Cold Deficiency; it can also be applied topically to control bleeding. It supports sexual function and treats Kidney-Spleen Yang Deficiency with Stomach Cold presenting as vomiting, poor appetite, and loose stool.
- Cornu Elapnurus Parvum, Mi Rong, the immature, still-haired antler of the moose, shares properties similar to those of Lu Rong.
- Antlers of this kind regrow after being shed or cut.
- Deer antler was put to comparable use by both Native American peoples and traditional European practice.
- Lu Rong, Rx. Lateralis Aconiti Preparata Zhi Fu Zi, and Cx. Cinnamomi Rou Gui all warm the Kidney and fortify Yang. Zhi Fu Zi and Rou Gui share an acrid, harsh, hot, drying nature, acting quickly and forcefully to warm the Interior, dispel Cold, and support Yang tonification. Lu Rong, by contrast, is sweet, warm, soft, and moistening, working gradually to tonify Yang while also moistening Jing and Blood. All three address Kidney Yang Deficiency, but Zhi Fu Zi and Rou Gui suit only cases with Excess Internal Cold and are unsuitable where Jing or Blood is deficient. Lu Rong does not expel Internal Cold, but is the better choice for Yang Deficiency accompanied by insufficiency of Jing, Blood, and marrow.
- Lu Jiao Jiao warms the Du and Chong channels to build Blood, but does not clear Heat from the Lung channel or stop coughing. Colla Corii Asini, E Jiao, nourishes Blood, moistens Dryness, and clears Heat. Rx. Polygoni Multiflori, He Shou Wu, enters the Liver to tonify Blood, expel Wind, and darken the hair and beard, but cannot moisten Dryness or settle wheezing. Colla Plastri Testudinis, Gui Ban, strongly tonifies Jue Yin and fills the Ren channel to clear Heat and relieve steaming-bone disorder, but does not tonify Yang within Yin.
