Manifestations

  • Red, coin-sized macules appear across the scalp, trunk, limbs, and other sites, spreading fast
  • A large area of skin is affected
  • A layer of scale is present
  • The scales pile up thickly
  • Scratching readily dislodges the scales
  • A thick, hard, firmly attached scale may be present
  • Peeling back the scale exposes a shiny, light-pink membrane
  • Petechiae are found under the membrane
  • Most often occurs in those younger than 40
  • Symptoms intensify in summer
  • Lesions present for a long time may merge together
