Notes
- Some sources categorize this herb as a Qi-moving carminative.
- It is the leading analgesic for abdominal pain and one of the principal herbs for dispersing Qi Stagnation in the Middle Jiao.
- Ordinary culinary cardamom can substitute for it, though at a reduced dosage since it is more potent.
- Used alone as a powder, Sha Ren regulates Qi, calms the fetus, revives the Spleen and relieves Stomach constraint.
- As a powder on its own it also addresses bleeding and abdominal pain in pregnancy.
- It relaxes Small Intestine contractions.
- Sha Ren and Fr. Amomi Rotundus Bai Dou Kou share a similar flavor and nature, but Sha Ren is stronger, fuller, warmer and more drying, acting more on the Spleen and Stomach, so it suits more serious cases of Cold-Dampness lodged and constrained in the Middle Jiao; it also calms the fetus. Bai Dou Kou, by contrast, opens and disperses Lung Qi, has a clearer, more fragrant aroma and is less drying, and is used mainly for Phlegm-Dampness obstructing the Lungs with chest oppression, or for milder Cold-Dampness in the Middle Jiao.
- Comparing Sha Ren, Fr. Tsaoko Cao Guo, Fr. Amomi Rotundus Bai Dou Kou and Sm. Alpiniae Katsumadai Cao Dou Kou for promoting Qi: Sha Ren is strongest, Bai Dou Kou second, Cao Dou Kou third, and Cao Guo has almost no effect. For warming and drying, the order reverses — Sha Ren is weakest, Bai Dou Kou stronger, Cao Dou Kou stronger still, and Cao Guo is the strongest of all.
- Salt-prepared Amomum Fruit Yan Sha Ren is milder and less acrid — warming without drying — with a heightened ability to send Qi downward and calm the fetus. It can guide other herbs downward, warm the Kidneys and restrain urination, making it useful for morning sickness, a restless fetus, frequent urination and urinary incontinence.
- Amomum Husk Sha Ren Ke (Pericarpium Amomi Sha Ren Qiao) resembles Sha Ren but is milder and less warming, making it suitable for Spleen-Deficient patients needing a gentler treatment, and for milder conditions generally. The dosage is 3-4.5g.
- The seeds alone, Guang Sha Ren, are somewhat more potent, with a dosage of 2-5g.
