- Combined with Fossilia Ossis Mastodi Long Gu, it treats insomnia, neurosis, epilepsy, and other conditions needing stronger sedative action.
- Although produced by an animal, the material is essentially mineral in nature, and it must be crushed before decocting.
- It has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth.
- It is said to relieve fullness and rigidity in the hypochondrium, as well as scrofula and furuncles of all kinds.
- It also relieves Heart and Spleen pain caused by Qi Stagnation, reddish leukorrhea, goiter, and tuberculosis.
- For ulcerous paronychia and pus-filled phalangeal polyps: grind the thick shell into powder and take 6g each dose in an alcohol decoction of Flos Carthami Hong Hua, three times daily by mouth, applying it to the lesion topically as well.
- To draw pus from a painful swelling that has not yet festered, mix the powder with water and apply frequently to the affected site.

- According to one source, it softens hard lumps, dispels Phlegm, eliminates scrofula, relieves hiccups, restores sperm, and remedies metrorrhagia and leukorrhagia.
- Long Gu and Concha Ostreae Mu Li share many qualities and are frequently paired. Long Gu is sweet and astringent, enters the Heart and Liver channels, and is superior for arresting collapse, calming fright, and settling the Spirit; it does not soften hardness or disperse clumping, and its Yin-nourishing power is much weaker, so it is used less often for night sweats from Yin Deficiency. Mu Li is salty and astringent, enters the Kidneys, and softens hardness, transforms Phlegm, and cools Heat.
- Calcined Oyster Shell, Duan Mu Li, has a strengthened astringent action and an added drying quality, allowing it to check sweating and seminal loss and stop vaginal discharge; it secures the Lower Jiao, expels turbid Dampness, and restrains Deficiency sweating.
