Notes
- Some sources note that this herb is used infrequently.
- Its main uses are for gastrointestinal disorders — particularly worms and cancer — as well as rheumatism.
- It functions as a non-toxic anthelmintic.
- It is reported to help with abdominal bacterial infection.
- According to some sources, it dispels Wind and opens the channels.
- Hong Teng, Hb. Houttuyniae Yu Xing Cao, and Hb. Patriniae Bai Jiang Cao share a cooling nature, resolve toxicity, powerfully disperse the Blood, cool Blood Heat, and are each suited to treating Intestinal abscess. Hong Teng targets both the Intestines and the breasts, Yu Xing Cao targets the Lungs, and Bai Jiang Cao targets the Intestines; combined, the three treat gynecological abdominal pain caused by Blood Stasis.
- Hong Teng and Caulis Spatholobi Ji Xue Teng are commonly paired for Blood-Stasis abdominal pain. Both invigorate the Blood, but Ji Xue Teng also supplements and relieves pain relatively gently, whereas Hong Teng is more dispersing, cooling, and toxicity-resolving — making it a key herb for abdominal pain from pelvic inflammation.
- Hong Teng and Caulis Lonicerae Ren Dong Teng both resolve toxicity, reduce sores, clear Heat, and address Bi Syndrome and abdominal pain. Ren Dong Teng clears Wind-Heat from the collaterals to relieve pain, while Hong Teng resolves toxicity, invigorates the Blood, relieves pain, and treats breast and abdominal abscesses.
