Manifestations

  • The condition has persisted for a considerable time
  • Coin-sized dark or hyperpigmented patches appearing on the scalp, trunk, limbs, and elsewhere
  • A number take on the appearance of oyster shells
  • A dense, firm scale that adheres closely covers the surface
  • Scraping away the scale exposes a glistening, light pink membrane beneath
  • Petechiae are found underneath this membrane
  • Lesions of long standing may coalesce
  • The lesions are sometimes painful or develop fissures
  • Established lesions typically stay the same size and location, and fresh ones rarely emerge
  • In long-term cases, the condition may occur during any season
  • Resolution of the lesions leaves no scar
  • The nails may also be affected, showing stippling or pitting
  • Healing of the lesions proceeds slowly
  • Lesion color ranges from dark red to dull red, or appears neutral
  • Pruritus of variable degree, or none at all
  • Joint function may be impaired
  • The mouth is dry, yet there is no urge to drink
