Anmerkungen

  • In recent times it has commonly been applied to cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cancer.
  • It serves as a cheaper alternative to Xi Jiao, though weaker in action and therefore needed at a larger dose.
  • It is commonly employed for acute, severely painful throat infections.
  • It excels at clearing Heat from the Heart channel and resolving toxicity.
  • It suits Yang jaundice and toxic rashes, and it halts bleeding caused by Heat in the Blood.
  • It is effective against encephalitis B, high fever in infants and children, and thrombocytopenic purpura.
  • Shui Niu Jiao and Cornu Saigae Tataricae (Antelopis) Ling Yang Jiao share a salty, cold nature. Because Shui Niu Jiao is additionally bitter, it is more suited to clearing the Heart and stopping bleeding, whereas Ling Yang Jiao is more suited to clearing the Liver (Liver Wind). Shui Niu Jiao cools the Blood and clears toxic rashes, while Ling Yang Jiao addresses red eyes and superficial visual obstruction.
  • Shui Niu Jiao and Carapax Eretmochelydis Dai Mao both enter the Heart and Liver channels, clearing Heat, resolving toxicity, and calming convulsions and spasm. Dai Mao, sweet, salty and cold, more strongly extinguishes Wind and settles the Liver and convulsions, while Shui Niu Jiao, being bitter, works mainly by cooling Heat at the Blood level — clearing Heart Heat, cooling the Blood, and dispersing Stagnation.
  • Rhinoceros Horn, Xi Jiao, is the substance originally recorded in the Chinese materia medica; as an endangered species, it should no longer be used.
