Anmerkungen
- It has traditionally been likened to a battering ram among herbs.
- Most commonly it is used defatted, known as Prepared Semen Crotonis Ba Dou Shuang.
- The root, Croton Root Ba Dou Gen, is a moderate-strength remedy used for rheumatoid arthritis, hematomas, and snakebite, decocted at 3-10g.
- Studies show it inhibits cancer cell growth; for this purpose the oil should be removed first.
- In acute digestive-tract disease it is taken raw, with the peel, kernel skin, and juice removed.
- For chronic digestive conditions such as Food Stagnation and abdominal masses, it is charred black and ground into powder.
- It clears the bowels and treats diarrhea.
- Topically it has been applied to boils.
- For acute throat paralysis, which can be fatal without prompt treatment, a pill (Jie Du Wan) is made from 14 granules of this herb combined with 30g of Realgar Xiong Huang (which clears accumulated Qi) and 3g of Rx. Curcumae Yu Jin (which dissolves extravasated Blood); this is a powerful formula requiring careful use.
- Compared with the purgative Rx. et Rz. Rhei Da Huang — both expel the old to bring in the new, reduce accumulation, and harmonize the middle — Da Huang is Cold, treats Heat buildup in the Yang organs, has low toxicity, breaks up Blood Stasis, clears Damp-Heat, and relieves toxicity, whereas Ba Dou is Hot, treats internal Cold accumulation in the Yin organs, and is highly toxic.
- Defatted kernels (Fructus Crotonis Pulveratum) Ba Dou Shuang are less toxic, though only very small doses are appropriate; they drain downward, attack Phlegm, soften hardness, and break down accumulations.
- The unripe fruit carries greater toxicity than the ripe fruit.
- Dry-fried kernels Chao Ba Dou Ren are less toxic and less purgative.
- Sand-washed kernels Sha Yu Ba Dou Ren are less toxic.
- The husks, Ba Dou Ke or Ba Dou Qiao (Croton Skin), reduce accumulation, break up hardness, and transform Phlegm; they are used for Food Stagnation, scrofula, and Phlegm nodules, and when charred can ease dysenteric disorders.
