Notes

  • Some sources credit it with clearing Heat and toxin, moistening the Lung, and soothing the throat, treating toothache, dry cough without sputum, throat inflammation with hoarseness, tonsillitis, and constipation.
  • It is especially effective at spreading Lung Qi while also unblocking and draining the Intestines.
  • Pang Da Hai and Rx. Platycodi (Jie Geng) both spread Lung Qi, cool the Lungs, resolve toxicity, and benefit the throat. Jie Geng acts more intensely: it lifts Lung Qi, releases the Exterior, benefits the throat by clearing Phlegm and pus, and directs other herbs' actions to the Upper Jiao; it also treats dysenteric disorder and abdominal pain. Pang Da Hai, cooling and moistening, drains constrained Fire and is used specifically for throat disorders; it also moistens the Intestines, treating mild constipation and blood in the stool.
  • Pang Da Hai and Fr. Momordicae (Luo Han Guo) both cool Lung Heat, moisten the Intestines, and are mild enough to be used alone for sore throat and cough. Pang Da Hai spreads and disperses, excelling at opening and freeing Lung Qi and draining constrained Fire; it is mainly indicated for hoarseness, voice loss, sore throat, and Phlegm-Heat cough from blocked, constrained Lung Qi. Luo Han Guo moistens and cools, treating Phlegm-Fire cough and constipation, and moistens the Intestines more strongly than Pang Da Hai.
  • Pang Da Hai and Sm. Oroxyli (Mu Hu Die) rank among the best herbs for restoring lost voice, and can be sipped as tea throughout the day by those who must speak or sing for extended periods.
