Extra points

Location

  1. 01On the back of the hand, in the webs between the five fingers of each hand.
  2. 02Make a fist: the points sit between the heads of the metacarpal bones, four per hand, eight total.
  3. 03On the hand's dorsum, at the junction of the red and white skin of the finger webs — eight points total, located with the hand in a loose fist.

Needling

  1. 01Have the patient clench a fist to stretch the skin taut between the knuckles, then insert straight along the metacarpal bone up to 1 cun; this produces local distention and soreness, sometimes with an electric, numbing sensation radiating toward the fingertips.
  2. 02Insert perpendicularly along the space between the metacarpal shafts, 0.5–1 cun.
  3. 03Needle obliquely, 0.3–0.5 cun, or prick to draw a few drops of blood.
  4. 04Moxibustion may also be used.
