Channel

Classification
Window of Sky

Location

  1. 013 cun to the side of the laryngeal prominence, lateral to ST-9 Renying, along the posterior edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
  2. 02On the side of the neck, level with the Adam's apple, between the sternal and clavicular heads of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
  3. 03Level with the laryngeal prominence, between the two heads of the sternocleidomastoid. Note: the sternal and clavicular heads are easier to feel if the patient turns the head to the opposite side while resistance is applied to the chin. In women, locate the depression at the midline between the lower edge of the hyoid bone and the upper edge of the thyroid cartilage — the laryngeal prominence sits just below this. The point can then be found 3 cun (about one handbreadth) from the laryngeal prominence.

Needling

  1. 01Insert straight, 0.5 to 1 cun. Sensation: distention and constriction in the throat.
  2. 02Needle perpendicularly, 0.3 to 0.5 cun.
  3. 03Oblique insertion, 0.5 to 0.8 cun.
  4. 04Caution: needling more deeply risks puncturing the carotid artery or jugular vein.
  5. 05Moxibustion may be used.
