Associations

Notes

  • Some sources hold that it sends Qi downward and disperses Blood.
  • Used externally with a little salt as a wash, it treats field dermatitis.
  • She Gan and Lasiosphere/Calvatia (Ma Bo) both clear Heat, benefit the throat, resolve toxicity, and disperse clumped Heat, and are often paired for throat swelling and pain; She Gan is bitter and cold, sends pathogenic Heat downward, and transforms Phlegm, while Ma Bo is light and dispersing, acrid and neutral, and works on the Lungs and Blood to treat epistaxis and throat swelling and pain from Wind-Heat.
  • Dry-fried as Chao She Gan, it is milder in cold and bitter properties, suiting deficient patients with a sore, swollen throat.
  • She Gan and Rx. Sophorae Tonkinensis (Shan Dou Gen) act similarly to clear Heat, though She Gan is more effective at dispelling Phlegm and dispersing Stagnation, while Shan Dou Gen is more effective at sedating Fire.
