- Lian Zi and Sm. Euryales Qian Shi are both tonifying, binding seeds, sweet, neutral, and astringent, that enter the Spleen and Kidneys to tonify these organs and treat chronic diarrhea and spermatorrhea. Qian Shi additionally eliminates Dampness and is the stronger choice when Dampness dominates a Deficiency pattern, such as with vaginal discharge, while Lian Zi nourishes the Heart, restores communication between Heart and Kidneys, and treats persistent uterine bleeding.
- Lian Zi and Rz. Dioscoreae Shan Yao share a sweet, neutral, astringent nature, both entering and strengthening the Spleen and Kidneys while astringing the Intestines and Lower Jiao; the pair is often combined for diarrhea from Spleen or Kidney Deficiency that has led to spermatorrhea, enuresis, or vaginal discharge. Shan Yao also enters the Lung channel to tonify Lung Yin and stop coughing from Deficiency consumption, functioning mainly as a tonic that augments Qi and Yin across the Lungs, Spleen, and Kidneys, whereas Lian Zi additionally nourishes the Heart, calms the Spirit, stops bleeding, and is often used to restore Heart-Kidney communication when its disruption has caused palpitations, insomnia, spermatorrhea, Deficiency irritability, wasting-thirsting disorder, or bleeding such as hematuria or persistent uterine bleeding.
- Fresh Lotus Flesh Xian Lian Rou, with its pure fragrance, potent Qi, and strongly cooling nature, treats internal pathogenic Heat that disrupts Stomach Qi.

- Stone Lotus Seed Shi Lian Zi, bitter and cold, eliminates Damp-Heat, clears the Heart, and frees the Stomach; it treats Heat toxin, vomiting, and dysenteric diarrhea with an inability to eat or drink, along with painful urinary dysfunction.
- Covered Stone Lotus Qian Shi Lian astringes the Intestines and stops diarrhea more strongly, and is used for uncontrollable, long-standing diarrhea and chronic dysenteric disorders; taken alone, it is powdered and washed down with an aged-rice soup for chronic, persistent diarrhea.
- Stone Lotus Flesh Shi Lian Rou is used for acute illness marked by a heavy accumulation of newly contracted pathogenic Heat, and is applied alone for vomiting and diarrhea with an inability to eat or drink.
