Notas
- According to some sources, this herb clears Heat, regulates Lung function, and promotes urination.
- It benefits skin conditions marked by pronounced swelling and Phlegm.
- Externally, it is applied to inflamed skin.
- In Europe and the Americas it has long been used as a folk antibacterial.
- During the Middle Ages it served as a remedy for gallstones and kidney stones.
- Depending on use, it can either lift or lower Qi, treating upper-body Wind-Phlegm, facial and eye swelling, swallowing difficulty, and any accumulation of toxic Heat.
- Studies show it inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
- For throat swelling caused by Heat, simmer 15g of Niu Bang Zi in 200 ml water down to 40 ml, and take this three times daily.
- The root, Rx. Arctii (Burdock Root, Niu Bang Gen), is crushed and its juice given for pharyngeal swelling in children.
- For chronic malignant boils, ulcerated masses, and stubborn anal fistula, crush Niu Bang Gen, mix with lard, and apply daily to seal the lesion.
- For amenorrhea with a severely distended abdominal mass, steam 1000g of Niu Bang Gen three times, place it in a silk bag, and soak it in 1000ml of wine for five days; drink a small cup of the wine before each meal daily.
- Niu Bang Zi and Hb. Menthae Haplocalycis (Bo He) both spread and disperse Wind-Heat, and are often paired for that purpose. Niu Bang Zi, being bitter, draining, and slippery, vents Wind-Heat without causing sweating and benefits the throat; it also cools, resolves toxicity, spreads Lung Qi to stop cough and transform Phlegm, vents skin rashes, and eases bowel movement. Bo He, acrid and cool, induces sweating; it disperses Heat from the face and eyes, treats sores and rashes, regulates Qi, relieves constraint, and — through its aroma — breaks up turbid filth.
- Dry-fried Arctium (Chao Niu Bang Zi) is milder in cold, slippery nature and avoids injuring Middle Jiao Yang Qi, making it suitable especially for elderly or deficient patients.
- Processed Arctium (Zhi Niu Bang Zi) or cooked Arctium (Shu Niu Bang Zi) has a rising action that lets it travel through all twelve channels, expelling Wind from the skin and clearing toxic rashes.
