Notas
- Gui Ban Jiao, the glue prepared from Gui Ban, is heavier and more cloying in nature, acting almost purely to tonify Yin and nourish the Blood; it is taken at 3-9 gm, dissolved into wine or into the strained decoction.
- Its significance lies in a dual action: it raises Qi upward from the Lower Jiao, addressing prolapse and a weak, sore low back and legs, while simultaneously moistening the Yin and settling Yang that has risen upward, as in Internal Wind and Deficiency Fire.
- This herb enriches the Yin and firms the resolve, and is used for insufficiency of Yin and Blood, consumptive Heat, steaming-bone disorder, chronic cough, malarial disease, masses whether mobile or fixed, continuous uterine bleeding, all five types of hemorrhoids, difficult labor, and patterns marked by Yin Deficiency with frail Blood.
- Gui Ban and Carapax Trionycis Bie Jia are both shell substances that enrich Yin, subdue Yang and soften hardened masses. Bie Jia enters chiefly the Liver channel and has the stronger action on enriching Yin and softening hardness, making it the choice for gynecological presentations such as abdominal masses and clumping at the flanks; being salty, cold and green in color it enters the Liver, addresses disorders of the Liver channel Blood level, and travels through the Chong channel. Gui Ban, by contrast, enters chiefly the Kidneys, and its sweetness gives it the superior ability to enrich Yin so as to anchor Yang while also opening the Ren channel to treat gynecological problems such as continuous uterine bleeding; its black color directs it to the Kidneys, where it treats all disorders of the Kidney channel Blood level, and it additionally opens the Heart.
- Gui Ban strongly tonifies Jue Yin and fills the Ren channel, reducing Heat and dispelling steaming-bone disorder, though it cannot tonify Yang within Yin. Colla Corii Asini E Jiao nourishes Blood, moistens Dryness and clears Heat. Rx. Polygoni Multiflori He Shou Wu enters the Liver to tonify Blood, dispel Wind and darken the hair and beard, but cannot moisten Dryness or settle wheezing. Colla Cornus Cervi Lu Jiao Jiao warms the Du and Chong channels to augment Blood, but does not clear Lung channel Heat or stop coughing.
- Gui Ban and Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum Lu Rong both augment the Kidneys, strengthen bone and address atrophy and weakness of sinew and bone. Gui Ban augments Kidney Yin, opens the Ren channel, subdues Yang, tonifies Blood and stops bleeding, making it best suited for continuous uterine bleeding arising from Yin Deficiency Heat or Heat in the Blood. Lu Rong reinforces Kidney Yang, generates Jing and augments marrow, treating uterine bleeding due to Yang Deficiency instead. Because Gui Ban tonifies Yin and Lu Rong tonifies Yang, the pair is frequently combined for combined Yin and Yang Deficiency.
- Cu Chao Gui Ban, vinegar-fried Turtle Plastron, enters the Liver channel with a heightened ability to subdue Yang, and is used for Liver Yin Deficiency with Liver Yang Rising as well as uterine bleeding caused by the Liver's failure to store Blood.
- Jiu Chao Gui Ban, wine-fried Turtle Plastron, both tonifies and moves, treating atrophy and weakness of sinew and bone.
- Colla Plastri Testudinis, Gui Ban Jiao (Turtle Plastron Glue), is heavier and more cloying, and its action is almost entirely to nourish Yin; the dose is 3-9g, dissolved into wine or into the decoction before it is taken.
- Carapax Testudinis, Gui Jia, is salty and cold, enters the Liver and Kidney channels, and affects the mind. It nourishes Yin and the Kidneys and strengthens bone, and is used for intermittent fever from Yin Deficiency, night sweating, dizziness, internal stirring of Liver Wind due to Deficiency, physical atrophy, and fearfulness with forgetfulness.
