- Sang Ji Sheng and Rx. Dipsaci Xu Duan share the same therapeutic action despite differing in nature and flavor, and either may be substituted for the other or the two combined. Both tonify the Liver and Kidneys, strengthen the sinews and bones, and augment Blood to calm the fetus. Sang Ji Sheng additionally expels Wind-Dampness, making it the better choice when low back, sinew and bone pain stems from Liver and Kidney Deficiency with Wind-Damp Bi, whereas Xu Duan disseminates and unblocks all the channels and is especially good at connecting sinew and bone.
- Sang Ji Sheng and Cx. Acanthopanacis Wu Jia Pi both dispel Wind-Dampness and tonify the Liver and Kidneys to strengthen sinews and bones. Sang Ji Sheng is neutral, more moistening and gentler at expelling Wind-Dampness; it tonifies Blood rather than Liver-Kidney Yang and is best at restoring Blood nourishment to joints affected by Wind, Cold and Dampness. Wu Jia Pi, acrid, bitter and warm, is primarily an expeller of pathogens and also warms Liver-Kidney Yang.
- Sang Ji Sheng and Cx. Eucommiae Du Zhong both treat low back pain. Sang Ji Sheng dispels Wind-Damp and tonifies Blood to relieve pain, while Du Zhong tonifies Qi and strengthens soft tissue to the same end; the two are often used together.
