  • It is helpful in addressing various sensory disturbances.
  • This herb suits insomnia or palpitations stemming from suppressed emotion.
  • Traditionally, it is credited with benefiting wisdom.
  • Honey-fried and used on its own, it treats insomnia with excessive dreaming.
  • For boils, abscesses, and painful, swollen breasts caused by Phlegm obstructing the channels and collaterals, it may be taken internally as a liquor-mixed powder or applied topically as a paste.
  • Yuan Zhi and Sm. Zizyphi Spinosae Suan Zao Ren share an entry into the Heart channel, calming the Spirit and addressing palpitations, anxiety and insomnia. Yuan Zhi's acrid, dispersing, bitter, draining and warm nature lets it unblock stagnation, support Heart Yang and boost Heart Qi, restoring Heart-Kidney communication and thereby strengthening resolve — making it better suited to palpitations and insomnia stemming from a Heart-Kidney disconnect accompanied by confusion, poor concentration and forgetfulness. Suan Zao Ren, being sour, sweet and neutral, nourishes Heart and Liver Blood and fits Deficiency-type irritability and insomnia better, its sour, astringent quality generating Fluids and curbing the Spirit's excessive dispersal.
  • Yuan Zhi, Sm. Zizyphi Spinosae Suan Zao Ren and Sm. Platycladi Bai Zi Ren all reach the Heart channel to calm the Spirit and treat fright, palpitations and insomnia. Being sweet and neutral, Suan Zao Ren and Bai Zi Ren nourish Heart Yin and Liver Blood, fitting Deficiency-type irritability and insomnia best. Bai Zi Ren acts mainly on the Heart and also moistens and lubricates the Intestines for dry constipation, whereas Suan Zao Ren acts mainly on the Liver, where its restraining, astringent quality checks sweating and generates Fluids to address thirst from Fluid injury and profuse Deficiency sweating. Yuan Zhi, acrid and dispersing, bitter and draining, and warm, unblocks stagnation, supports Heart Yang and boosts Heart Qi to restore harmonious Heart-Kidney communication, calm the Spirit and strengthen resolve — better suited to palpitations and insomnia from a Heart-Kidney disconnect with confusion, poor concentration and forgetfulness. It also disperses Stagnation, expels Phlegm, reduces swelling and resolves sores, useful for cough from Cold-Phlegm and for Cold obstructing the Qi that lets Phlegm and Dampness enter the channels and produce toxic, swollen sores.
  • Yuan Zhi and Rz. Acori Tatarinowii Shi Chang Pu both reach the Heart, clearing Phlegm and opening the Orifices. Shi Chang Pu, acrid and warm, relies on its aromatic fragrance to open the Orifices and disseminate Qi and Dampness while expelling Phlegm. Yuan Zhi expels Phlegm, calms the Spirit and sharpens the mind, using its bitterness to drain and bring down Phlegm that has rebelled upward into the Heart. The two are frequently paired.
  • Processed Polygala, Zhi Yuan Zhi, is less drying and causes less of the numbing throat irritation, while its Spirit-calming effect is stronger.
  • Honey-prepared Polygala, Mi Zhi Yuan Zi, transforms Phlegm and stops cough more strongly, making it best for coughs with copious, hard-to-expectorate Phlegm.
