- Its primary use is for blood-streaked Phlegm.

- Zong Lu Pi and Nodus Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Ou Jie both astringe to stop bleeding. Ou Jie is sweet and astringent, stopping bleeding while reducing Blood Stasis, and when used fresh also cools Blood Heat. Zong Lu Pi, bitter and astringent, binds and restrains more strongly than Ou Jie and is used mainly for bleeding not linked to Blood Stasis; it also dries Dampness, making it suitable for vaginal discharge.
- Traditionally only aged Trachycarpus fiber, Chen Zong Pi, is used medicinally — the older and more weathered, the more effective.
- Charred Trachycarpus Chen Zong (Zong Lu Tan, Zong Pi Tan) enters the Blood and stops bleeding of all kinds, suitable for nosebleed, hematemesis, Intestinal Wind and continuous uterine bleeding provided no internal Heat is present. It is the most commonly used form, best applied for heavy bleeding once any Stasis or obstruction has already been fully cleared.
- Fructus Trachycarpi Zong Lu Zi, the fruit of the same plant, shares similar functions and indications, but is more effective for hypertension, insomnia or excessive dreaming; its dosage range is 6-30g.
