Anmerkungen

  • Myristicin, one of its constituents, has hallucinogenic effects.
  • The ability to astringe diarrhea belongs only to the processed herb; fresh Rou Dou Kou can actually bring on diarrhea instead.
  • Formulas containing this herb are typically prescribed for children and the elderly.
  • For dysenteric disorders it is best taken together with rice congee, while for vomiting and diarrhea it should be taken with a tea of fresh ginger.
  • Rou Dou Kou and Fr. Tsaoko Cao Guo share the ability to dispel Cold, dry Dampness and move Qi to regulate the Spleen and Stomach, and both are acrid in flavor. Rou Dou Kou, however, carries a stronger astringent quality that lets it secure leakage and loss from the Large Intestine, and because it warms both Spleen and Kidneys it addresses the Middle and Lower Jiao together, whereas Cao Guo acts specifically on the Middle Jiao.
  • Roasted Nutmeg Seeds Wei Rou Dou Kou is less likely to irritate the Intestines and contains less of the hallucinogenic myristicin, while its astringent action is strengthened for stopping diarrhea.
