Anmerkungen

  • Though bitter, it is not drying, and its action directs downward.
  • Being salty, it can enter the Blood, and being cold, it clears Heat without injuring the Yin.
  • It cools Heat of both Deficiency and Excess type.
  • It is useful for prolonged low-grade fever from lingering pathogenic influences.
  • It cools the Lungs and directs fluids downward.
  • Bai Wei, Cx. Moutan Mu Dan Pi and Cx. Lycii Di Gu Pi all cool the Blood and reduce Deficiency Heat, treating Heat from Yin Deficiency with low-grade fever. Mu Dan Pi and Di Gu Pi can also reduce Blood Heat and treat upper- or lower-body bleeding from Excess Heat causing chaotic Blood movement. Mu Dan Pi additionally dispels Blood Stasis, which the other two do not, and suits steaming-bone disorder and consumptive Heat without sweating; Di Gu Pi treats the same disorders but with sweating present. Bai Wei's ability to cool the Lungs resembles that of Di Gu Pi, but unlike either of the others, Bai Wei can vent residual pathogenic Heat that has injured the Yin in the late stages of a febrile disorder, and it can also promote urination.
  • Bai Wei, Rx. Stellariae Yin Chai Hu and Hb. Artemisiae Annuae Qing Hao all clear pathogenic Heat, though Qing Hao neither cools the Lungs nor promotes urination, and Rx. Stellariae Yin Chai Hu does not vent Heat or Blood Heat outward at all — it only cools Blood Heat internally.
  • Fresh Cynanchi Xian Bai Wei is more effective at cooling Heat toxin and reducing scrofula, and is often applied topically on its own.
  • Honey-prepared Cynanchi Zhi Bai Wei acts mainly on the Lung channel, treating night sweats, recurring Heat and hemoptysis.
  • Dry-fried Cynanchi Chao Bai Wei has a milder cooling nature, making it better suited to Yin Deficiency patients or those with Spleen and Stomach weakness.
