Localisation

  1. 01On the hand's ulnar edge, in the pronounced hollow proximal to the fifth metacarpal head; locate it with the hand clenched into a fist.
  2. 02With the hand made into a fist, the point lies behind and to the side of the fifth metacarpal head, at the highest point of the crease the clenched fist forms.
  3. 03With a loosely closed fist, find it at the ulnar end of the distal palmar crease, proximal to the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint, where the crease ends at the red-white skin junction.

Puncture

  1. 01Needle perpendicularly, 0.5 to 2 cun deep, aiming toward LI-3 Sanjian; the hand should be loosely fisted with the metacarpal bones aligned in one plane.
  2. 02Puncture 0.5 to 0.7 cun deep.
  3. 03Moxibustion may be used.

Associations

  • For severe night sweating

  • Clears both Exterior and Interior Heat from the Small Intestine channel as it reaches the head, particularly the ears and eyes, benefiting the sensory orifices

    • SJ-16

For neck stiffness with an inability to turn the head

  • For headache

  • For head and eye pain

  • For forearm pain

  • For elbow contracture

  • For shoulder and back pain

  • For malaria with predominant Heat and slight Cold

  • For the five types of epilepsy

  • For epilepsy

  • For epileptic convulsions, aimless wandering, insomnia and Heart agitation

  • For mania with an urge to climb to high places and sing, tearing off clothes and running about

  • For sudden-onset mania

  • For deafness

  • For nosebleed with labored breathing

  • For jaundice

  • Frees the Governing Vessel and can influence the entire spine in both acute and chronic conditions (not for one-sided pain); tonifies the Kidneys (mainly in men) and promotes release of ACTH and sex hormones

  • For chronic lower-back pain in women

  • For tertian malaria

  • For lower-back spasm

  • For leg pain

  • For tidal fever with chills predominating over heat

    • LI-4

Paired with SI-3 for finger spasm

Notes

  • This point has a notable effect on the spine overall, and is commonly used for pain in the upper spine, scapula and lumbar region.
  • It can be needled deeply toward LI-3 when all four fingers are involved.
  • It is a valuable point for expelling febrile disease.
  • It works best in acute cases rather than chronic ones.
  • Use reinforcing technique to induce sweating during fever.
  • Use reducing technique to stop night sweats.
  • It serves as a first-aid point for convulsions, particularly intestinal spasm with loss of consciousness.
  • For regulating sweating: reduce to stop sweating, reinforce to induce it.
