Notas
- Among the sedative herbs, this is the one most often used; its energy is gentle and its quality nourishing.
- This herb resembles Sm. Platycladi Bai Zi Ren in treating insomnia from Blood and Yin Deficiency, though Bai Zi Ren suits Heart Blood Deficiency better and Suan Zao Ren suits Heart Yin Deficiency better.
- It tonifies the Interior while astringing the Exterior — tonifying Blood to calm the Spirit, and resolving and astringing Yin to stop sweating.
- Taken alone as a powder before bed, it can treat neurasthenia.
- It tonifies all five Yin organs, addressing Heart Qi Deficiency, Lung Qi Deficiency, Liver Yin and Blood Deficiency, Kidney Qi Deficiency, Spleen Qi Deficiency and Gallbladder Qi Deficiency.
- Suan Zao Ren, Rx. Polygalae Yuan Zhi and Sm. Platycladi Bai Zi Ren all enter the Heart channel, calm the Spirit and treat fright, palpitations and insomnia. Suan Zao Ren and Bai Zi Ren are both sweet and neutral, nourishing Heart Yin and Liver Blood, and both suit irritability and insomnia of Deficiency type. Bai Zi Ren acts mainly on the Heart and also moistens and lubricates the Intestines for dry constipation, whereas Suan Zao Ren acts mainly on the Liver; it restrains and consolidates, astringing sweat and generating Fluids to address thirst from damaged Fluids and profuse Deficiency sweating. Yuan Zhi, acrid and dispersing, bitter and draining, and warm and unblocking, assists Heart Yang and boosts Heart Qi to restore communication between the Heart and Kidneys, calming the Spirit and strengthening resolve; it suits palpitations and insomnia from a Heart-Kidney communication failure marked by confusion, poor concentration and forgetfulness. It also disperses Stagnation, expels Phlegm, reduces swelling and disperses sores, and treats cough from Cold-Phlegm and toxic swollen sores arising when Cold obstructs the Qi and lets Phlegm and Dampness enter the collaterals.
- Dry-fried Spiny Zizyphus Chao Suan Zao Ren tonifies warmly, nourishing the Heart and astringing the Liver; it calms the Spirit, promotes sleep and addresses irritable thirst and Deficiency sweating.
