Notas

  • It is commonly paired with Rz. Zingiberis Officinalis Gan Jiang to treat Cold in the Liver Channel presenting as hernias, inguinal Cold and gynecological pain.
  • It disperses abdominal Cold that causes distention, pain and digestive upset, and also serves as a reproductive tonic.
  • Warmed and applied topically to the scrotum and abdomen, it treats cold-type hernial disorders.
  • It is the common culinary spice fennel.
  • Xiao Hui Xiang and Rx. Linderae Wu Yao are both acrid, warm and aromatic. Wu Yao spreads and frees the Qi, activates the Spleen and Lungs, and reaches the Liver, Kidneys and Bladder; it smooths and descends Qi, disperses Cold and relieves pain by clearing rebellious Qi from the chest and abdomen. Xiao Hui Xiang, on the other hand, does not act on the upper Jiao and instead addresses the Middle and Lower Jiaos — descending Qi to settle nausea, disperse Cold and relieve abdominal pain, with particular note for treating bulging disorders.
  • Xiao Hui Xiang and Sm. Trigonellae Hu Lu Ba are both aromatic and warm, expel Lower Jiao Cold, treat bulging disorders, and are frequently combined. Xiao Hui Xiang acts on the Middle Jiao to stimulate appetite, settle nausea and relieve abdominal pain and distention, and on the Lower Jiao to warm and treat bulging disorders of every type — though large doses can be excessively drying. Hu Lu Ba, confined to the Lower Jiao, is essentially a strongly warming Yang tonic with a mild aroma that expels lurking Cold Qi accumulated there.
  • Dry-fried Fennel Chao Hui Xiang mobilizes less strongly but warms and regulates the Middle and awakens the Spleen more effectively; it is frequently used for nausea and vomiting from Stomach Cold or poor appetite from Spleen Deficiency.
  • Salt-fried Fennel Yan Hui Xiang descends into the Kidneys more strongly, warming and dispersing pathogenic Cold in the Lower Jiao.
