- Lu Dou, Sm. Phaseoli Chi Xiao Dou, and Sm. Glycinis Hei Dou share the abilities to promote urination, reduce edema, resolve toxicity, and treat skin lesions, abdominal distention, Damp-Heat jaundice, and Heat-toxin abscesses and swelling. Chi Xiao Dou is sweet, sour, and neutral to slightly cool; it enters the Heart and Small Intestine channels and, at the Qi level, benefits the Stomach, cools Heat, and promotes urination. It expels pathogenic water or Summerheat through the urine and treats edema, diarrhea, dysenteric disorders, and jaundice. At the Blood level it descends Fire, moves the Blood, and reduces Heat toxin, treating boils, abscesses, and ulcerations arising from intense Heat toxin in the Blood; it may be applied either externally or internally. Lu Dou is sweet and cool, enters the Heart and Stomach channels, cools Summerheat, and lessens toxic reactions to other herbs. Well suited to Heat Stroke and unquenchable thirst, it is frequently paired with Rx. Glycyrrhizae Gan Cao as an antidote for poisoning, especially from herbs, and suppresses Heat and resolves toxicity more strongly than Chi Xiao Dou, without drying. Hei Dou (Black Soybeans) is sweet and neutral, enters the Spleen and Kidney channels, and moves Blood, promotes urination, expels Wind, and resolves toxicity. It treats edema, relieves distention, descends rebellious Qi, controls Wind-Heat, invigorates the Blood, and reduces toxicity. Paired with Rx. Glycyrrhizae, it serves as an antidote for herbal poisoning generally, and is often combined with other herbs for Wind-predominant Bi with spasms, postpartum convulsions, and Heat-toxin swellings and abscesses; it too can be used both externally and internally.
- Mung Bean Skin Lu Dou Yi is sweet and cold, enters the Heart and Stomach channels, and functions similarly to Lu Dou — though it clears Summerheat only weakly, it clears Heat and relieves toxicity more strongly. It also reduces superficial visual obstruction and benefits the eyes, at a dosage of 6-12g.
