Notes

  • Cleavers has long been valued by herbalists as a lymphatic tonic and diuretic. The lymph system flushes toxins out of tissues and returns them to the bloodstream, where the Liver and kidneys filter them out; this cleansing action is what makes cleavers helpful for conditions such as psoriasis and arthritis that respond to blood purification. As a dependable diuretic, it helps clear gravel and urinary stones and treats urinary infections. In cats, these same actions make it a safe long-term support for feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), and it may also help with chronic low-grade kidney inflammation. Research has shown that cleavers extract lowers blood pressure without slowing the heart rate or producing harmful side effects.
  • Botanically related to coffee, its roasted seeds serve as a coffee substitute, and the young leaves can be eaten in the same way as spinach.
  • Studies have shown it inhibits cancer-cell growth.
  • The ancients regarded it as an excellent remedy for obesity and for cleansing the Blood.
  • As a lotion, it serves as an excellent tonic for both scalp and skin, clearing the scalp of dandruff.
  • It was once believed to cure leprosy, and it is still used today for skin cancer.
  • For breast, thyroid, cervical, and submandibular gland cancer, 30g (150g if fresh) is decocted with an appropriate amount of brown sugar, taken as one dose 3-6 times a day.
  • For appendicitis, 120-180g of the fresh herb is decocted.
  • For tongue and gum cancer, it is used daily as a gargle, with no fixed dosage limit.
  • Applied externally, it treats ulcerated breast cancer, vulvar cancer, and penile cancer.
  • For visceral and breast cancer, 30g is taken as a decoction, or 150g is pounded into a juice.
  • One source states that it cures carbuncles, abdominal masses, tympanites, and jaundice.
  • For breast cancer, it is decocted and drunk, or 120g is pounded and mixed with lard for topical application.
  • Research has demonstrated its inhibitory effect on acute lymphocytic leukemia and acute agranulocytic leukemia.
