  • For amebic dysentery, it is decocted alone and taken three times a day for six days.
  • For bleeding from traumatic injury, it is applied topically as a powder.
  • Cx. Punicae Granati Radicis Shi Liu Gen Pi has similar properties but is used more often for killing parasites (dosage 1.5–9 g); it can irritate the digestive system and is more toxic on a cumulative basis.
  • White Pomegranate Husk is said to treat white dysentery, and Red Pomegranate Husk to treat red dysentery.
  • Applied externally, it treats disorders such as rectal prolapse, sores and deep-rooted toxic swellings through its drawing, or "lifting out," action.
  • Shi Liu Pi and Cx. Ailanthi Chun Pi both bind the Intestines to treat diarrhea and dysentery, stop bleeding, and kill parasites. Shi Liu Pi, sour, astringent, warm and restraining, has the stronger binding action and suits diarrhea, dysenteric disorders, incessant uterine bleeding and vaginal discharge stemming from Deficiency Cold; Chun Pi, bitter, astringent and cold, clears Heat and dries Dampness but astringes less powerfully than Shi Liu Pi, making it the better choice for dysenteric disorders, incessant uterine bleeding and vaginal discharge due to Damp-Heat or Heat.
  • Charred Pomegranate Husks Shi Liu Pi Tan astringe and restrain more strongly, and are used mainly for chronic diarrhea, dysenteric disorders or incessant uterine bleeding.
