Notes

  • This herb acts on the Right Kidney and the Ming Men.
  • Hu Lu Ba and Fr. Foeniculi Xiao Hui Xiang share an aromatic, warming nature, both dispelling Lower Jiao Cold and treating bulging disorders, and the two are commonly paired. Xiao Hui Xiang acts in the Middle Jiao to improve appetite, calm nausea, and relieve abdominal pain and distention, and in the Lower Jiao to warm and address every type of bulging disorder, though it can dry excessively at high doses. Hu Lu Ba, by contrast, acts only in the Lower Jiao and functions essentially as a strong warming Yang tonic with a mild fragrance, expelling lurking Cold Qi that has accumulated there.
  • Hu Lu Ba, Rx. Aconiti Lateralis Preparata Zhi Fu Zi, and Rx. Curculiginis Xian Mao each warm Kidney Yang, with Hu Lu Ba being the mildest of the three.
  • Research has shown anti-tumoral activity for this herb, particularly against cervical and liver cancer.
  • Dry-fried Fenugreek Seed Chao Hu Lu Ba is a bit less bitter and drying, somewhat stronger at tonifying Kidney Yang, and still resolves Dampness, though it is weaker at expelling Wind-Dampness; it suits Deficiency Cold of the Kidneys with abdominal and rib-side fullness and distention.
  • Salt-prepared Fenugreek Seed Yan Chao Hu Lu Ba goes directly to the Kidneys, strengthening its Yang-tonifying action, and is used for testicular pain from Cold-type bulging disorders, impotence, low back pain from Kidney Yang Deficiency, and dysmenorrhea.
