- Hai Zao and Meretricis/Cyclinae Ge Qiao are both salty and cold, softening areas of hardness, reducing Phlegm, and facilitating fluid movement to reduce edema; Hai Zao enters the Liver channel and is stronger at softening hardness and dispersing clumps, making it better for goiter, testicular pain and swelling, and hepato/splenomegaly, while Ge Qiao enters the Lungs and is better at cooling the Lungs and descending Phlegm-Heat, making it more suited to cough and chest pain from Phlegm-Fire.
- Hai Zao and Thallus Eckloniae Kun Bu are similar in properties and action; Hai Zao is bitter as well as salty and cold, with a turbid flavor, and its cooling and therapeutic actions are milder than those of Kun Bu.
