Notas
- Being greasy in nature, this herb encourages Dampness, generates Heat and readily causes fullness in the middle Jiao (see contraindications).
- It also tends to retain pathogenic influences (see contraindications).
- It clears Heat from the Heart Ying level.
- It is mainly used in formulas addressing Stomach Heat.
- In mild Stomach Yin Deficiency, Shi Hu can be taken daily as a tea.
- The herb is reputed to prolong life, and is nicknamed "honeymooners' tea" for its ability to rapidly replenish Jing, or sexual fluids.
- Shi Hu and Rx. Trichosanthis Tian Hua Fen are frequently paired, since both generate fluids, relieve thirst, nourish Yin, clear Heat and enrich the Stomach; but Tian Hua Fen, sweet and cold, enters mainly the Lungs and Stomach, is the stronger fluid-generator, and additionally descends Phlegm-Fire, expels pus and reduces swelling, while Shi Hu, sweet, bland, slightly salty and cold, enters the Kidneys and Stomach, enriches Kidney Jing and is superior at cooling Deficiency Heat.
- Shi Hu, Rx. Glehniae/Adenophorae Sha Shen and Rz. Polygonati Odorati Yu Zhu all enter the Stomach channel to clear Heat, nourish Yin and generate fluids, and all treat Stomach Yin and fluid insufficiency with dry mouth, thirst and wasting-thirsting disorder. Sha Shen and Yu Zhu also enter the Lung channel for coughs from Lung Yin Deficiency: Sha Shen excels at clearing the Lungs and moistening Dryness, working best for dry cough with scant or blood-streaked sputum, while Yu Zhu is the stronger enricher and moistener, suited to those with underlying Yin Deficiency who have also contracted an External disease. Shi Hu, by contrast, is better at clearing Heat, and is often called on when a febrile disease has damaged the fluids or to reduce Yin Deficiency Heat; it can also treat visual disorders, dizziness and weakness of the lower back and legs.
- Earring Dendrobium Er Huan Shi Hu also generates fluids but, being non-cooling, can be taken as a tea.
