- In people with Blood Deficiency, it supplements Spleen and Heart Qi.
- It is eaten as a food and confection, though overuse can damage the Spleen.
- Historically it has been noted to calm the emotions and treat food aversion.
- Taken long-term, it strengthens the corporeal and ethereal Souls, sharpens intelligence, lightens the body, slows aging, and aids enlightenment of the Spirit.
- It is reputed to help with menopause and is said to give the skin a diaphanous quality and the eyes a radiant, sexually vibrant look.
- Long Yan Rou and Fr. Jujube Da Zao are alike sweet and warm, augmenting Qi and Blood and tonifying the Spleen and Stomach while calming the Spirit. Da Zao calms the Spirit less but is better at moderating the harshness of other herbs so they do not injure the Spleen, while Long Yan Rou, sweeter and warmer, benefits the Spleen more and is more moistening, tonifying Blood over Qi, and is more effective at calming the Spirit, lifting the emotions, and enriching the Heart.
