- Use caution during pregnancy or in weak individuals.
Notes
- Strongly relieving cough and dyspnea, it suits cases with little or no Phlegm, and is often turned to when other herbs have failed. It is well suited to Cold-type cough and dyspnea, and may be taken alone as a powder, prepared by slicing and rolling the dried flower for smoking, or combined with other herbs.
- It relieves pain effectively throughout much of the body and can be used alone for chest and abdominal pain, Wind-Damp arthralgia and pain from traumatic injury. In large doses it has an anesthetic effect, which is why it served as a narcotic in ancient times.
- Its spasm-stopping action makes it suitable for epilepsy and chronic infantile convulsions, where it is combined with Wind-Extinguishing, spasm-stopping and Phlegm-Resolving herbs such as Quan Xie, Tian Ma and Zhi Tian Nan Xing.
