Notes

  • The tail is regarded as the most potent part.
  • Ge Jie strengthens Yang without producing the Dryness and Heat side effects.
  • Combined with Qi tonics, it gives an excellent overall tonifying effect on Qi.
  • It is also effective for wasting and thirsting disorder.
  • It is said to resolve paralysis from apoplexy and abdominal masses from Blood Stagnation.
  • Studies show it inhibits cancer cell growth.
  • According to one source it reduces Blood Stasis and resolves tumors.
  • For scrofula, the herb is calcined and pounded into a powder, of which 0.3g is taken with wine each time.
  • For pestilence, one Gecko is calcined and combined with 75g of Faeces Bombycis Can Sha (washed twice and sun-dried) and 2–2.5kg of wheat flour; this is dried, ground to a powder, and taken orally at 15–30g before each meal with a decoction of Cacumen Platycladi Ce Bai Ye.
  • Among Ge Jie, Hippocampus Hai Ma, Hb. Epimedii Yin Yang Huo, and Fr. Cnidii She Chuang Zi, Ge Jie is the least potent at fortifying Yang, but uniquely calms wheezing and stops cough by assisting the Kidney's grasping of Qi and strongly tonifying Lung Qi — an ability the others lack.
  • Ge Jie and Cordyceps Dong Chong Xia Cao both tonify the Lungs and Kidneys, warm Yang, augment Jing, and settle cough and wheezing. Ge Jie, salty and neutral, calms wheezing and stops cough by helping the Kidneys grasp Qi, and it strongly tonifies Lung Qi as well. Dong Chong Xia Cao calms wheezing and stops cough instead by bringing down rebellious Qi; it also transforms phlegm, stops bleeding, and stops sweating by reinforcing Wei Qi.
  • Oil-crisped Gecko, You Su Ge Jie, has a more pleasant smell and breaks apart more easily; it is best suited for tonifying the Lungs, augmenting Jing, aiding Qi grasping, and settling wheezing.
  • Wine-fried Gecko, Jiu Chao Ge Jie, more effectively tonifies the Kidneys and fortifies Yang, and is frequently used for impotence caused by Kidney Yang, Jing, and Blood Deficiencies.
