Localización

  1. 01At the level of the laryngeal prominence, on the front border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, where the pulse of the common carotid artery is palpable.
  2. 021.5 cun to the side of the laryngeal prominence.
  3. 03Level with the tip of the laryngeal prominence and 1.5 cun lateral to it, in the hollow between the front border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the lateral border of the thyroid cartilage.
  4. 04Note: the carotid artery runs just beneath the surface and is easily felt at the sternocleidomastoid's front border; this point lies between the artery and the thyroid cartilage's lateral border.
  5. 05Note: have the patient lie flat with no pillow. Palpate the laryngeal prominence, then, moving laterally, the edge of the thyroid cartilage; a little further out, the carotid pulse becomes palpable. Using the index finger of one hand, open up the space between the cartilage's edge and the artery, then needle into that space with the other hand.
  6. 06Note: the laryngeal prominence is less pronounced in women than in men. When it is hard to make out, feel for the midline depression between the lower border of the hyoid bone and the upper border of the thyroid cartilage — the laryngeal prominence lies just below this.
  7. 07Level with the tip of the Adam's apple, where the pulse of the common carotid artery is palpable at the front border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.

Punción

  1. 01Insert straight or at an angle, 0.5 to 1 cun. Sensation: local distention and soreness, extending toward the shoulder.
  2. 02Caution: do not puncture the artery.
  3. 03Insert perpendicularly, 0.5 to 1 cun.
  4. 04Caution: take care not to puncture the artery — palpate it first, then hold it to the side during needling, using the index finger and thumb of one hand positioned above and below the point.
  5. 05Insert perpendicularly, 0.3 to 0.5 cun. Avoid puncturing the common carotid artery.
