Localización
- 01On the midline at the nape, 0.5 cun below DU-16 Fengfu and below the (impalpable) spinous process of the first cervical vertebra. Note: the posterior hairline lies one cun below DU-16 Fengfu, so DU-15 Yamen, at the midpoint, sits 0.5 cun above the hairline.
- 02Located between the spinous processes of the first and second cervical vertebrae, in the hollow 0.5 cun inside the hairline at the nape's midline and 0.5 cun below DU-16 Fengfu.
Punción
- 01Insert perpendicularly, angled slightly downward, 0.5 to 1 cun.
- 02Moxibustion has traditionally not been used at this point.
- 03Caution: the spinal canal sits roughly 1.5 to 2 cun beneath the skin, depending on build; deep perpendicular needling and oblique insertion toward the brain are both strictly forbidden.
- 04Insert straight, one to two cun, aiming level with the mouth or earlobe; once placed, the needle should not be twisted or manipulated. Expect local distention. A pronounced electric sensation signals that the needle has reached the spinal cord — if this occurs, withdraw it at least partway.
- 05Caution: take great care not to direct the needle upward into the medulla oblongata, as this can be fatal.
- 06Needle perpendicularly, 0.5 to 0.8 cun.
