Notas
- According to some sources, this herb also eases anxiety.
- Different parts of the plant serve different roles: the leaf, Fol. Perillae Zi Su Ye, releases the Exterior; the stem, Ramulus Perillae Su Geng, opens the chest; the lower portion addresses morning sickness in pregnancy; and the fruit, Zi Su Zi, sends Qi downward.
- It is favored for asthma in patients who are constitutionally weaker.
- It suits coughs brought on by Cold.
- Zi Su Zi, Caulis Perillae Zi Su Geng, and Fol. Perillae Zi Su Ye all regulate Qi but each targets different symptoms: Zi Su Ye, being light and lifting, harmonizes the Middle, stops nausea and expels External Wind-Cold by dispersing and smoothing Lung Qi, opening the muscle layer and exterior, draining Wind and transforming the pathogen; Zi Su Geng frees Middle Jiao Qi and clears obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, opening and draining Internal Qi, relieving clumping, stopping pain, sending Qi down, calming wheezing, freeing the Stomach, rousing the Spleen and treating Leg Qi; Fr. Perillae Zi Su Zi is slippery and moves straight downward, sending Qi down, reducing Phlegm, easing cough and moistening the Lungs.
- Both Zi Su Zi and Sm. Sinapis Bai Jie Zi address cough and dyspnea from Cold-Phlegm, but differently: Zi Su Zi excels at bringing rebellious Qi back down, settling wheezing and dispersing Phlegm, treating cough and acute wheezing from Cold-Phlegm, while Bai Jie Zi is intensely drying, mobilizes the channels and collaterals, and is best at moving Qi and drying Phlegm.
- Dry-fried Perilla Fruit Chao Zi Su Zi is far less moistening and instead concentrates on sending Qi down, expelling Phlegm and relieving cough and wheezing — this is the form most commonly used. The raw fruit is reserved for moistening the Intestines and treating cough.
- Prepared Perilla Fruit Zhi Zi Su Zi moistens the Lungs and Large Intestine more effectively and relieves cough and wheezing, particularly in Yin Deficiency patients who are also constipated.
