  • High doses can cause fainting and apnea.

  • As a decoction, it can serve as an eyewash for red or inflamed eyes.
  • It works well for externally contracted cough.
  • According to some sources, this herb is warm without being drying, and mildly moistens the Lungs, making it suitable for any type of cough — hot, cold, acute, or chronic — including Wind-Heat attacking the Lungs.
  • It is frequently paired with Rx. Asteris Tataricae Zi Wan, which expels Phlegm while Kuan Dong Hua stops the cough; Zi Wan, pungent and drying, suits Cold-induced cough, whereas Kuan Dong Hua, cooling and moistening, suits dry cough.
  • Honey-prepared Tussilago Flower Mi Zhi Kuan Dong Hua moistens the Lungs and relieves cough more strongly, and is suited to cough or wheezing from Lung Deficiency, and — with suitable added herbs — Lung Yin Deficiency cough.
  • Dry-fried Tussilago Flower Chao Kuan Dong Hua is less acrid and dispersing, making it better suited to dry cough from Qi or Yin Deficiency, though it is less effective than Mi Zhi Kuan Dong Hua.
